School Allotment Club

Welcome to SGFS Allotment Club page!

At SGFS we have a wonderful new allotment area at the back of the school. In Allotment Club we learn lots about how to grow different plants and vegetables and throughout the year we look after them and help them to grow.  We intend to sow, grow, eat and sell the produce that we produce.

Mrs McNally runs the allotment club with Mrs Salter, a volunteer, every Thursday after school and all keen green-fingered children from Year 2 and Year 4 come along on a rota basis to help. Each year group also has their own planting jobs so the area will be very busy with lots of little green fingers!

April 2022

We are currently preparing the raised bed for new compost and painting the fences and planters.  We are raking and hoeing the ground to ensure that the earth is ready for planting our range of vegetables in the new term.    We have also created a bug hotel using old pallets we found in the allotment area and will also use them to create wall planters and tool storage.

May 2022

Our allotment area is now looking clean and tidy and ready for us to get planting.  We have been sowing lettuce and carrots, cabbage and broccoli ready to put into the planters and have enjoyed ‘chitting’ our early potatoes in class.   We took great care to plant our vegetables when there was no risk of frost and will make sure they are watered regularly.  We are very grateful to our parents’ for also donating plants and gardening tools. This month we shall also begin to plan our new wild flower garden in the school grounds so we are all very excited!

Thank you to Year 2, 3 and 4 for all your hard work this term.  The allotment looks great and we are all very excited about this new area of our school!
