South Gosforth First School - Mathematics Curriculum

'Mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas' - Albert Einstein
'Mathematics can perform magic on the world; letting us see patterns and regularity, where previously we might have only noticed chaos and confusion' - Mike Askew

At South Gosforth First School, our maths curriculum is designed to develop confident, resilient, and fluent mathematicians who can apply their knowledge and skills to a wide range of problems and real-life situations.

We deliver a high-quality, inclusive curriculum, in line with the National Curriculum, that is both engaging and ambitious, ensuring all learners experience success and make meaningful progress.

Our curriculum fosters curiosity, creativity, perseverance and a positive mindset towards learning. We aim to develop independent thinkers who are not afraid to make mistakes, and who can make strong, long-term connections across mathematical ideas and the wider curriculum.

By embedding fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving at the heart of our teaching, we ensure pupils acquire deep, lasting understanding. They leave us equipped with essential skills that are easily recalled, transferable, and relevant - ready for the next stage of their education and for every day life.
