Nursery Attendance Options for Families

At South Gosforth First School we have a School Nursery which has capacity for 26 full time equivalent places. Children will attend nursery for three terms prior to their entry into their Reception school year. At South Gosforth First School, we do prioritise 30 hour places in Nursery, but we do also offer 15 hour places if we don't fill our spaces with 30 hour pupils. Families can access 15 or 30 hours of free nursery provision for their children who are 3 years old on or before 31st August of the admission year - This is dependent upon the specific circumstances of each family. We offer three options of places:

Option 1:

Free 30 hours Monday to Friday (8.40am – 3.10pm)

Option 2:

Free 15 hours Monday and Tuesday (8.40am – 3.10pm), Wednesday morning (8.40am – 11.40am)

Option 3:

Free 15 hours Wednesday afternoon (12.10pm – 3.10pm), Thursday and Friday (8.40am – 3.10pm)

Our Nursery Environment

Our Nursery environment comprises indoor and outdoor learning spaces which are designed to promote independence and to provide children with a wide range of learning opportunities through a carefully balanced play-based approach. Children engage in activities which help develop their personal, social and emotional skills as well as their communication skills and physical development.

Early Learning in Nursery

Our Nursery practice prepares children with the foundations for Phonics ensuring that the children are then ready to access Phonics in Reception. We foster a strong Reading for Pleasure culture in Nursery, while developing children’s language. Daily planned opportunities to develop mathematical knowledge and skills are delivered through using concrete resources and manipulatives as well as pictorial representations to enable pupils to start to visualise and understand early mathematical concepts.
