Reception at South Gosforth First School

Back to Early Years

Our Reception Provision

At South Gosforth First School we have a 60 place Reception unit. The children are taught the more formal elements of the curriculum (Phonics, Reading, Maths and Writing / Fine Motor Work) in their own specific classes (Puffins or Robins) however pupils across Reception all mix together to access 2 focused and purposeful 'Busy Play' sessions (including free-flow access to our EYFS outdoor area) every day.

Our skilled staff team of Early years practitioners, assess our children's development frequently throughout the school day and we use this information carefully to inform our provision in order to make sure that we are meeting the needs of all of our learners.

Our spacious Reception space includes 2 classrooms with a multitude of high-quality and carefully considered resources for our children to access, as well as a 'Creation Station' for creative and messy activities, a sensory room, and a well-equipped outdoor space with climbing equipment, water play, large sand play area and even a woodwork and construction area.

Planning

Planning to help every child to develop their language is vital; the development of children’s spoken language underpins all seven areas of learning and development. Our EYFS curriculum is ambitious and carefully sequenced to ensure children build on their learning over time. Staff plan activities and experiences for children that enable them to develop and learn effectively.

We use the EYFS Framework to inform planning. Teachers plan together around topics which inspire and engage the children, whilst also allowing flexibility to incorporate the children’s interests and stage of development. Whole class teaching, as well as small group adult directed activities are planned daily to ensure that children’s needs are immediately responded to. Where a child may have a special educational need or disability, staff consider whether specialist support is required, linking with relevant services from other agencies, where appropriate. In planning and guiding children’s activities, teachers reflect on the different ways that children learn and include these in their practice.
