At South Gosforth, our highly ambitious and progressive Art & Design curriculum gives pupils opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding of artistic techniques and processes. We want our pupils to have a sense of wonder, appreciation and curiosity of Art & Design and the creative world around them.

Our Art & Design curriculum is sequenced so that within each unit the children generate ideas, use their sketchbooks, develop skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour), improve their knowledge of artists and are given time to evaluate and analyse their own work and the work of others.

In this way, our children learn to appreciate a diverse range of artists, art styles, art movements and cultural heritages alongside the more formal elements of Art & Design.

Supplementing our planned, progressive curriculum are opportunities to explore local and national galleries. Each year the whole school participates in the National Gallery project, ‘Take One Picture’ which provides time for pupils to work collaboratively, developing research skills, communication and critical thinking.

Throughout their time at South Gosforth, pupils make visits to local art galleries in Newcastle and the wider community. Links are made with local artists to further enhance the learning within our Art & Design curriculum. As enhancements to our provision in school, there are opportunities for all our children to attend extra-curricular Multi-Disciplinary Art clubs. Pupils’ art work is also celebrated throughout school in range of exciting and interesting displays.
